Little was previously known about Getaway when we first featured it in our 2013 car chase film preview a few months ago, and the pervading silence ever since has done little to quench our thirst for information on the intriguing car-centric thriller.
Today finally sees the first trailer, however, and it’s safe to say that Getaway could well be worth the wait for car chase connoisseurs.
But before you get excited, no it’s not a remake of Steve McQueen’s The Getaway. Nor is it a film adaptation of the 2002 video game of the same name.
Getaway stars Ethan Hawke who plays Brent, a former racing driver whose wife is kidnapped by ‘The Man’ who communicates instructions via the car radio Eagle Eye-style.
Disney star Selena Gomez also joins the ride in an uncharacteristically feisty role as ‘The Kid’, who initially attempts to hold up Hawke’s character after he attempts to commandeer her prized Mustang. Before long the pair become embroiled in ‘The Man’s plans and join forces in an attempt to thwart the villain and presumably save the day.
Okay, it’s hardly an earth shatteringly original plot by any stretch of the imagination and it has ‘low-rent straight-to-DVD’ written all over it (the fact it’s set in Romania also doesn’t do it any favours), but judging from the trailer Getaway will live up to its title in spades, delivering copious amounts of automotive action.
The true star of the film appears to be the Shelby Mustang GT500 seen predominately throughout the various police chase sequences previewed in the trailer. Factor in some additional track racing scenes and a plethora of high-octane stunts, and Getaway is already proving itself to be one to watch when it’s released on August 30thst.
